Annapurna Expedition 2010

Day Ten: Trek from Jungle Camp to Phulkharka (4,200m)

Today, we woke up at 6:30am, had breakfast in our individual tents, and ventured out into the cool windy morning. We watched as the porters packed up camp, then began up the hill towards the Thuloburgin Pass (4,310 meters). The terrain was very similar to yesterday at the start, but after reaching 4000 meters, it flattened out and traversed across the final slope to the pass at 4,310 meters. From here, the slopes became gentler rolling hills along a wide ridge. The views became quite spectacular after the pass, with Nilgiri South to the left and the Annapurna massif dead ahead. We reached the top of the ridge at 4,570 meters then began our descent to Phulkharka which lies at an altitude of 4,200m, slightly higher than the  elevation of Annapurna North Base Camp. Again, we waited hours for our equipment to arrive, all the while baking in the afternoon sun, no shade in sight. The bags finally arrived and we set up camp among the remnants of the Korean Expedition’s debris (they left quite a bit of trash behind; all the labels were in Korean, so there was no mistake as to who’s trash it was). Once camp was all set up, we settled in with our books while Indra prepared dinner, and watched Annapurna disappear into the clouds.
