Day Twenty-three: Climb toward Camp III; Return to Base Camp Today, after a horrible night’s sleep in Camp II, I packed up my things, deposited the majority of them in Jorge’s Camp II tent, then headed up toward Camp III. I decided that I would go up a few hours, only enough to clearly see the route, then descend down to Base Camp, rather than waste the energy in reaching Camp III empty-handed and without a tent to sleep in. I can then rest a couple of days in base camp, then head back up to sleep in Camp III (my tent should be deposited by Joao in Camp III on the 17th if everything goes according to plan). At this point, I will be acclimatized for my summit push and will only have to wait for a weather window to present itself. I arrived back down in Base Camp around 1pm, ate lunch, had a much needed shower, then spent the afternoon reading and occasionally dozing off in my base camp tent. Tomorrow will definitely be a rest day, and if the weather cooperates, and I’m feeling up for it, I will climb to Camp II the following day, then sleep in Camp III on the 19th (another rest day may, however, be in order).
