Day Twenty-seven: Climb from Base Camp to Camp II (5570 meters) Today, I woke up at 6:30am and packed up my things which took longer than normal thanks to the fact that I wasn’t sure whether this was only an acclimatization climb or a potential summit bid (I needed to be sure I had my 8000 meter down mitts, down jacket, and down pants, as well as enough food for the next week at altitude). I finally left Base Camp at 8am, arrived quickly to Camp I despite the fact that I was carrying at least 30kg’s, and set out over the crevasse field to Camp II. I arrived to Camp II at 2:30pm, unpacked my things, melted snow for water, then settled in as the whiteout yielded snow and the winds started to pick up. I slept exceptionally well in Camp II indicating that I was extremely well acclimated to this altitude. Tomorrow I will climb up to Camp III and hopefully sleep there, then descend.
For anyone out there interested in map coordinates, here are the coordinates for Camp II on Annapurna (accurate to 35 ft): N 28° 37.604’ E 083° 49.580’
Photos: Left: High winds, as forecast, were evident from the start; Right: Camp II (photo from the previous climb to Camp II, as there were whiteout conditions today upon arrival) |
