Broad Peak is the 12th highest mountain on Earth at 8,047 meters or 26,400 feet. The first ascent of Broad Peak was made on June 9th, 1957 by an Austrian team. The peak was originally named K3 before it was discovered that the summit was over 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) long when it became known as Broad Peak. The 2007 50th anniversary expedition to Broad Peak will depart the United States on June 8th, 2007, arriving in Islamabad on the 10th of June. The expedition will most likely proceed as follows: |
Nicholas Rice will be attempting to climb Broad Peak without the aid of high altitude porters or supplemental oxygen. Nick will be acting as leader of the expedition (as per the permit) as a favor to Adventure Tours Pakistan, however this will be a solo expedition. |
