Dispatch Thirty-Four: July 13th, 2007

Day Thirty-Four: Rest Day at Base Camp

Today, we woke up at 8:30am, had our usual leisurely rest day breakfast, and relaxed. Badia, Mauricio, Jorge, and finally I had a shower. Afterwards, I decided to fix my tent platform, as it had morphed into a very lumpy uncomfortable place to sleep. Aided by our cook, Ali Hassan, we completed the renovation within an hour, and hooked up the solar array to the battery and restored power. After this significant effort, we had lunch. Shortly afterwards, Carlos arrived back in Base Camp from Camp III (starting from Camp III at 6:30am arriving at Base Camp at 11:40am) strong as always, and told us of the group effort to break trail to the summit. He said that Dirk had arrived at the summit quite exhausted but that was the last he had seen of him. We chatted for awhile, Carlos showered, we watched the rescue of the Italian lady from Camp I, and then we had dinner with the ritual chocolate cake for the post summit celebration.
