2009 Shishapangma Expedition |
Day Twelve: Advanced Base Camp; Mario and I Organize Equipment Today, we woke up feeling considerably more acclimated than the previous day. We headed over to the mess tent and had a long leisurely breakfast. Mario and I decided that we would stay in base camp tomorrow and the day after to fully acclimate to the altitude here (5,500 meters) before heading up to make a deposit or place Camp I. Being the first expedition, we will have the unenviable task of forging the route through the penitents to the start of the snowfield to Camp I and will surely need to be operating at maximum efficiency. After breakfast, Mario and I sorted our food and high altitude equipment into barrels, and further set up our mess tent, constructing an additional place to store our huge number of condiments. We spent the afternoon rigging a makeshift filter in the stream near our camp to reduce the huge amount of sediment that was in our drinking water and afterward, greeted Carlos Pauner’s group as they arrived to ABC. We had dahl baht for dinner and again got to bed reasonable early. |
