2009 Shishapangma Expedition |
Day Twenty-seven: Rest Day in Advanced Base Camp; Snow Today, after an amazing night of sleep, Mario, Paola and I enjoyed a leisurely breakfast with a cheese omelet, bacon, and Italian espresso. Afterwards, I took advantage of the shower tent that Gopal had installed while we were up on the mountain. I spent the afternoon doing laundry and tidying up around camp. The afternoon brought the arrival of a Chinese expedition, which put a Chinese flag at the top of a chorten, something we thought was quite offensive (akin to hanging an American flag from the top of a crucifix). Snow followed in base camp. Mario and I settled into the mess tent with our tech equipment and books and killed the remaining hours of the day. A quick addition to yesterday’s dispatch: upon descending from Camp II, I was pleasantly surprised to find one of the Sherpas in Camp I had found my ice axe, buried in the snow close to where I left it. Mario’s has yet to turn up. Photos: Left: Shishapangma viewed from close to Advanced Base Camp ; Right: Dahl Baht (the dog) in Camp I |
