2009 Shishapangma Expedition |
Day Forty-three: Summit Bid Cancelled due to High Winds/Snow Today, after waking up at 3:00am, packing up our things, and having breakfast, we started to notice the start of a lenticular cloud on top of moonlit Shishapangma. We switched on Mario’s Thuraya, and checked for news from Victor regarding the weather. The forecast was worse than we expected. It called for high winds and heavy snow for the next few days. We saw a silver lining toward the end of the forecast in the fact that winds were dropping and that the new snow that was forecast to fall in the next few days would have a chance to settle with five days of ‘strong sun’ and high winds. We therefore decided to postpone our summit push tentatively close to the 15th of October, when the wind speeds drop and the snow has had a chance to settle. Thanks to our postponed summit bid, we were able to bid farewell to Andrew Lock, Neil Ward, Lou, and Pasang as they headed down to Chinese Base Camp with their yaks.
