2009 Shishapangma Expedition |
Day Fifty-one: Trek from ABC to BC; Drive to Nyalam Today, we woke up at 6am, had a quick breakfast, then packed up our base camp tents and remaining gear. Last night, of the eight yaks that we requested from our Liaison officer, only five arrived (the ones included in the contract). There was no way that all of equipment could fit on only five yaks, so I negotiated with the yak herders and we agreed that for 300 Yuan each, they would also porter loads down to Chinese Base Camp. In the end, we paid 1200 Yuan for four yak-men to porter loads, and all of our equipment finally started down to Chinese Base Camp. Horia, Kinga, and I started down around 9am and arrived at 1pm (Nepal time). We waited for over an hour for the jeep and gear trucks to arrive, all the while being subjected to the noisy Chinese version of Yatze that the Liaison officer’s cook and assistant were playing. The jeep arrived with the liaison officer inside, and as soon as the yaks arrived, we packed up the trucks and headed down to Nyalam. Our LO told us that it was too late to continue down to Zhangmu today (fine with me, as Nyalam is a lot cleaner than Zhangmu, so better to sleep there). We arrived at 10pm, went across the street to the Snow Land Restaurant, ate the horrible food they served, then went to bed.
